Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery is a new innovation that has been developed in the last few years internationally. The first robotic system developed was a system called the Mako. This system was then taken over by Stryker, one of the largest Orthopaedic companies in the world. Over the subsequent years the procedures were perfected and now we are able to perform hip and knee total joint replacements as well as partial knee replacements using the robot.

Dr Bugwandin is one of the first surgeons in South Africa trained to use this technology. The training consisted of lectures, demonstrations in the laboratories, cadaver in surgeries and live surgeries. The system utilises a Computerised Tomograpghy (CT scan) of the joint which is entered into the robotic system. The surgeon then develops a plan on the system and utilises the robot to assist with a major part of the surgery. The surgeon still maintains control of the surgery but the robot assists in improving the accuracy of the surgery.

Early results show that robotic surgeries have a shorter operating time, a shorter hospital stay, a quicker recovery time and lower pain scores. The data also shows that the long term outcomes are improved using this technology. The robot decrease the risk of surgical complications and damage to surrounding tissues during the surgery.

Our theatre complex at Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre will be the first in KwaZulu-Natal to utilise this technology and it is one of the first centers in the country to be able to offer this cutting edge technology to our patients. Dr Bugwandin is one of the local pioneers in this type of surgery.
