Our Practice and our work

Dr Bugwandin setup his Private practice at Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and eventually expanded his practice to Umhlanga. Dr Bugwandin is primarily based at these centres but he does perform surgical work at other centres when the need arises.

Our practice is a specialist Orthopaedic surgical practice. The practice focuses on knee, shoulder and hip diseases as well as sports injuries and trauma. Dr Bugwandin uses evidence based medicine coupled with the latest practices to diagnose and treat conditions affecting these areas. A multidisciplinary approach is used to diagnose and treat Orthopaedic disorders. Conservative and surgical treatment is used depending on the condition and the severity. Treatment is also tailored to suit the individual, allowing us to devise a bespoke solution. Dr Bugwandin works with a team of specialists. The team would include Anaesthetic specialists, Physicians, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Orthotists, Specialized nursing and wound care, amongst others. The practice does also cater for simple general Orthopaedic conditions outside of the specialized areas noted above and we work closely with specialists in other conditions.

Most diseases are initially treated conservatively (non-operatively), with some exceptions. If there is failure to respond to these treatments other modalities are considered. A large proportion of our surgery is undertaken as “keyhole” surgery. This is Arthroscopic surgery that is minimally invasive and undertaken through tiny incisions using cameras and special instruments. Our joint replacement surgery is undertaken robotically and manually depending on patient factors. Part of our treatment is rehabilitation and modern, up to date techniques meeting the highest international standards are used by our rehabilitation teams.

The instrumentation and devices used in our surgical procedures meet the highest international standards. All surgeries and techniques follow the latest international guidelines and protocols. Our protocols are evidence based and rooted in peer review from the leading international experts in the field of Orthopaedic surgery.
